Return To ShopA cracked Galaxy screen is easy to recognise — but Samsung display faults don't always look the same. Lines, black patches, flickering, failed touch or a completely black display can all point towards screen damage, but the symptoms don't always tell the whole story.
The visible glass, AMOLED display and touch system work together as part of the screen assembly. Understanding the symptoms helps establish what has actually been damaged before deciding on the repair.
Different symptoms can point towards different types of display damage. These are some of the most common Samsung screen faults we see in the workshop.
The outer glass may be cracked while the picture underneath still looks completely normal and touch continues to work.
Dark purple or black areas can appear beneath the glass and may gradually spread after an impact.
One or more vertical lines can suddenly appear, sometimes after a drop or pressure on the screen, and sometimes without obvious external damage.
A screen that flashes, changes brightness unexpectedly or intermittently loses the image can have more than one possible cause.
The phone may still ring, vibrate, make notification sounds or connect to a charger even though nothing appears on the screen.
The display can still show a perfect image while touch is partly or completely unresponsive.
Two phones can show similar symptoms for different reasons. At FoneFix, we'd rather establish what has actually failed before recommending a screen replacement.
Sometimes customers see a cracked outer surface, a perfect picture underneath and naturally assume only the glass needs replacing. Technically, glass-only refurbishment can exist — but that is not the same thing as a conventional Samsung screen replacement.
The glass is cracked, but the picture still looks normal and touch still works. From the outside, it can seem as though the glass should simply peel off and be replaced.
The outer glass is bonded to the display assembly. Separating and refurbishing it requires specialist equipment and carries a risk of damaging the working AMOLED panel during the process.
Even when the picture still works, the panel beneath the broken glass may already have suffered stress from the original impact.
Glass-only refurbishment is very different from fitting a complete replacement screen assembly and is not suitable for every damaged display.
Where a genuine Samsung screen assembly is fitted, the damaged display unit is replaced rather than attempting to separate and rebuild the existing panel.
If your Samsung needs a screen replacement, we'll explain the repair and the part being fitted rather than suggesting a glass-only option where that isn't the service we provide.
Yes. Some faults strongly suggest physical display damage, but others can have more than one possible cause. That's why symptoms such as a black screen or flickering display are worth diagnosing rather than automatically assuming a new screen will fix the phone.
A completely dead phone and a working phone with a failed display can look identical from the front. Checking whether the handset is actually running is an important first step.
Freezing, crashing or unusual behaviour after an update can occasionally resemble a hardware problem. Restarting and basic checks can help separate software behaviour from physical screen failure.
A hard drop can affect internal connections or other components as well as the display. Visible screen damage doesn't automatically prove it is the phone's only fault.
If display problems started after moisture or liquid exposure, the fault may extend beyond the screen and the phone should be assessed before parts are ordered.
If a Galaxy has an obviously smashed AMOLED panel with black patches or lines after an impact, the likely problem may be clear. If it simply stopped displaying one morning, we'd rather check the phone first than sell a screen it may not need.
If it still rings, vibrates, produces notification sounds or reacts when connected to power, that information can help when diagnosing a black-screen fault. Tell us exactly what happened before the problem started and what the phone still does now.
Once we've established that the display itself needs replacing, the next step is straightforward: identify the exact Galaxy model, confirm the correct screen assembly and explain the repair before anything is fitted.
Screen assemblies vary between Galaxy models, so identifying the exact handset is essential before pricing or ordering the correct part.
At FoneFix, Samsung screen replacements use genuine Samsung parts rather than cheap generic replacement screens.

Check repair options →A few of the questions we regularly hear from customers with damaged or faulty Galaxy displays.
If the glass is cracked, the screen assembly is physically damaged even if the image and touch still work. Whether you choose to replace it immediately depends on the severity of the damage, but cracks can worsen and reduce protection against moisture and further impact.
Black, purple or spreading patches are commonly associated with internal AMOLED display damage, often after impact or pressure. The outer glass does not always need to be visibly cracked for the display underneath to be damaged.
A coloured vertical line can indicate a fault within the display panel or its internal connections. It can appear after impact, pressure or another display failure, so the phone should be checked rather than relying on the line alone to identify the exact cause.
A failed display is certainly one possibility, especially after a drop, but it is not the only possible cause. If the phone still rings, vibrates or reacts to power, that information is useful during diagnosis.
Yes. If the fault is not obvious, we can assess the phone first and establish what is most likely to have failed before recommending a repair. We would rather diagnose the problem than replace a part unnecessarily.
Bring the phone to FoneFix Honiton or check your repair options online. If the fault needs diagnosis first, we'll establish what is actually wrong before recommending the next step.
