Battery life can change for several reasons, and not all of them mean the battery itself has failed. The timing of the problem can often provide useful clues about where to start looking.

An app running heavily in the background, constantly accessing location or behaving incorrectly can have a noticeable effect on battery life.

A phone working hard to maintain a weak mobile connection can use considerably more power than the same phone in an area with a strong, stable signal.

Excessive heat can increase battery drain and isn't good for lithium-ion batteries. If the phone is regularly getting unusually hot, the cause is worth investigating.

Look at battery usage, not just the percentage
The battery percentage tells you how much charge remains. Battery usage information can help explain where that charge has actually gone.

Look for an app using an unusual amount
If one app stands out despite barely being used, background activity may be contributing to the drain.
Compare usage with what you actually did
Heavy screen use, navigation or video should consume power. High drain while the phone has barely been used deserves more attention.
Think about when the problem started
A new app or recent software change occurring at the same time as the battery problem can be an important clue.
Don't judge the battery from one unusually heavy day
Navigation, photography, poor signal, gaming or lots of screen time can dramatically change battery life. A repeated pattern under your normal usage is much more useful when deciding whether something is wrong.
When the battery may be the problem
What are the signs of a worn Google Pixel battery?
Lithium-ion batteries don't last forever. Their usable capacity gradually reduces with age and charging cycles, so eventually a Pixel may simply no longer run for as long as it once did. The pattern of the problem is often more useful than one symptom alone.
Battery life has gradually become much shorter
If the same phone under broadly similar use has steadily gone from lasting comfortably through the day to needing regular top-ups, normal battery ageing becomes more likely.
The percentage falls unusually quickly
Rapid drops during relatively light use can be consistent with reduced battery capacity, particularly when there is no obvious app or usage pattern explaining the drain.
The phone shuts down unexpectedly
Unexpected shutdowns while charge is still showing can sometimes indicate a deteriorating battery, although other hardware or software faults can produce similar symptoms.
You're charging much more often than before
Needing several charges to get through the same normal day can be a practical sign that the battery's usable capacity has reduced significantly.
Look for a pattern over time
Battery ageing normally happens gradually. If battery life has deteriorated steadily over months or years, with no obvious change in how the phone is being used, the battery itself becomes a much stronger suspect.

There isn't a single amount of daily battery life that proves
a battery is worn — usage varies enormously between people.
What matters is how the phone now compares with its own previous
performance.
A swollen battery is different
If the screen or rear cover appears to be lifting, the phone has developed an unexplained bulge, or there are other signs that the battery may be swollen, stop charging and using the device and have it inspected. A swollen lithium-ion battery should not be treated as ordinary battery drain.

Why are some Google Pixel battery replacements more difficult than others?
Pixel phones haven't all been designed in the same way. On some generations the battery is accessed by removing the OLED display, while newer models can be opened from the rear. That makes a significant difference to the repair.
Screen-entry design
The OLED display has to come off first
On several Pixel generations, reaching the battery requires the front display to be removed before the internal components and battery can be accessed.
Examples
Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 generations, including
many Pro and A-series variants.
The bonded OLED display must first be carefully separated from the frame.
Only after the screen is removed can the technician continue towards the battery.
The display is thin and vulnerable, so removal carries a genuine risk of OLED damage.
Rear-entry design
Newer models can be accessed from the back
Google changed the construction on newer Pixel models so that battery access no longer necessarily requires removal of the OLED display.
Examples
Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL use a rear-entry
route for battery replacement.
The repair begins by removing the rear cover rather than the front OLED panel.
Internal covers and components can then be removed as required to reach the battery.
Avoiding OLED removal removes one of the major risks associated with battery replacement on earlier Pixels.

If apps, software, signal or another cause is responsible, replacing the battery won't solve the underlying problem — and on a screen-entry Pixel it would expose the display to unnecessary removal risk as well.

A worn battery doesn't necessarily mean it's time for a new phone. If the Pixel still does everything you need and is otherwise in good condition, replacing the battery may give it considerably more useful life. But the overall condition of the phone and the particular Pixel model should be considered too.
Battery replacement may make sense when...
- The phone is otherwise working well and you're happy with it
- Battery life has genuinely deteriorated rather than simply changing because of an app or software issue
- The screen, cameras, charging system and other major components are in good condition
- You would rather extend the life of your existing phone than replace it unnecessarily
Think about the whole phone when...
- The display or rear glass is already damaged
- The phone has several unrelated faults that may also require repair
- It no longer has enough storage, performance or features for the way you use it
- The potential repair cost and risk are becoming difficult to justify compared with replacing the device

On models where the OLED display must be removed to reach the
battery, the risk of screen damage needs to form part of the
decision. Rear-entry models don't carry that same screen-removal
risk.
