How to share your location on iPhone using Find My
Apple's Find My app lets two people share their locations with each other on iPhone. It can be useful for partners, parents, relatives or anyone who wants the reassurance of knowing where someone is.

Before you start
A few things to check first
Setting up location sharing only takes a few minutes. Before you begin, check these three things on both iPhones. It will make the steps that follow much easier.

Location Services must be available
The iPhone needs Location Services so it can determine its position. You can check this under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.

Make sure you know who you're sharing with
Location information is personal. Only share it with someone you know and trust, and remember that either person can stop sharing later.
Worth knowing
Find My iPhone and sharing your location are not the same thing
The names are similar, so this is an easy point to misunderstand. Find My includes several features, but they do different jobs.
Find My iPhone
This helps you locate your own Apple device if it is misplaced or lost. It is part of Apple's wider Find My system.
Share My Location
This is the feature we are setting up in this guide. It allows a person you choose to see your location in Find My.

That's ideal. In the next section we'll set up location sharing step by step on the first iPhone.
Step-by-step
How to share your location in Find My
Start with one person's iPhone. Follow these steps to share that person's location, then repeat the process on the other iPhone.
Open the Find My app
Find and open Find My on the first iPhone. Its icon normally shows a green and blue radar-style circle.
Tap People
Look at the bottom of the Find My screen. Choose the People tab.
This is the part of Find My used for sharing locations with other people.
Choose to share your location
Tap Share My Location. If people are already listed, you may instead see a + button that lets you start sharing with another person.
Select the person
Enter the person's name, phone number or email address. Select the correct contact, then tap Send.
Check the contact carefully before continuing, especially if several people have similar names.
Choose how long to share
The iPhone will ask how long you want your location to be available. Apple provides options including Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day and Share Indefinitely.
For ongoing sharing between close family members, Share Indefinitely is the option intended to continue until someone chooses to stop it.
Check that the person appears in Find My
Return to the People tab. The person should now appear there.
Once that person also shares their location with you, you should be able to view their position from the same screen.
Now repeat the steps on the second iPhone
For example, after Mum shares with Daughter, use Daughter's iPhone to share her location with Mum. Once both have shared, each person can see the other in the People section of Find My.

How to see where the other person is
Once location sharing is working, checking where someone is takes only a few taps. You don't need to repeat the setup each time.
FIND MY • PEOPLE
Finding Mum, Daughter or another person
Open Find My on your iPhone and follow these three simple steps.

Open Find My
Open the Find My app on your iPhone.

Tap People
Choose People at the bottom of the screen.

Tap their name
Select the person you want to locate. Their available location will appear on the map.
If their location is available
Find My displays the person on the map so you can see where their iPhone is reporting their location.
Need to get to them?
Tap Directions. Find My opens Apple Maps so you can get directions to their current reported location.
“No location found”?
This means Find My cannot currently locate that person. It does not necessarily mean that location sharing has been switched off.
Optional but useful
Get an alert when someone arrives or leaves
You don't have to keep checking the map. Find My can notify you when someone arrives at or leaves a chosen place — useful for family members who want a little extra reassurance.
HOW TO SET IT UP
Create a location alert
Once the other person is sharing their location with you, open their details in Find My.

Open Find My → People
Tap the name of the person whose location you are following.

Open the More options
Tap the More button, then under Notify Me, choose Add Location Alert.

Choose what should trigger it
Select whether you want an alert when they arrive at or leave a location.

Choose the place
Select an existing location or create a new one, then adjust the location radius if needed.

Choose once or every time
Decide whether the notification should happen once or recur whenever that location change happens.
When they arrive
For example, Daughter can receive an alert when Mum arrives home.
When they leave
You can instead choose to receive an alert when the person leaves a particular location.
Choose the area
The location radius can be adjusted. A larger radius means the alert can trigger when the person is near the location rather than directly at it.
A practical example: Mum and Daughter could continue sharing their locations normally, while Daughter also chooses an arrival alert for Mum's home. That can provide reassurance without needing to repeatedly open Find My and check the map.
If something isn't right
What if Find My isn't showing their location?
Don't immediately assume that location sharing has been removed. A missing or old location can have several causes, and some are temporary.
No location found
Find My knows the person is sharing with you, but it cannot currently obtain a location to show.
The location looks old
A position may not always update immediately. Check the iPhone's connection and give Find My another opportunity to refresh.
The person has disappeared
Check that location sharing is still enabled and that the correct person is being shared with.
QUICK CHECKLIST
Check these things on the iPhone
Work through the basics before changing lots of settings. Often, the cause is easier to find than expected.

Check the internet connection
Make sure the iPhone has a working Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. A poor or unavailable connection can affect location updates.

Check Location Services
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and make sure Location Services is turned on.

Check Share My Location
Open Find My → Me and check that Share My Location is enabled on the iPhone that should be sharing.

Check the correct person
In Find My → People, confirm that the intended family member or contact is still listed.

Try again after a short wait
If the settings look correct, reopen Find My after a short while. A temporary connection problem may resolve without changing anything.
Where is the main Location Services setting?
If you're helping someone who isn't confident with their iPhone, follow this path slowly and check that Location Services is switched on.

Find My is useful for everyday reassurance, but it is not an emergency monitoring service. If you have a genuine reason to believe someone may be in immediate danger, contact them or seek appropriate emergency help rather than relying only on the location shown in Find My.

Privacy and stopping location sharing
Sharing your location does not have to be permanent. You can stop sharing with one person, or temporarily hide your location from everyone.

Location sharing remains your choice
Setting this up for a parent, partner or other family member does not remove their control. They can change their sharing choices whenever they want.
Choose the people
Share with the people you actually want to have access to your location.
Choose the duration
Location sharing can be temporary or continue until you decide to stop it.
Stop when you want
Find My provides controls for changing or ending location sharing later.
Deleting the Find My app is not the correct way to stop sharing your location. Apple states that people you have already shared with may still be able to see your location after the app is deleted. Use the sharing controls in Find My instead.

Find My location sharing FAQs
A few questions often come up when families start using Find My. Tap any question below for a simple explanation.
Do both people need to share their location?
Yes, if both people want to see each other. Sharing your location with somebody does not automatically give you access to their location. They need to share their location with you as well.
Do we have to set Find My up every time?
No. When you choose ongoing location sharing, you do not need to repeat the setup each time you want to check the other person's location. Open Find My → People and tap their name.
Why isn't someone's location updating?
First check that location sharing is still enabled, Location Services is available and the iPhone has a usable connection. A temporary connection problem can also mean that Find My cannot immediately provide an updated position.
What does “No location found” mean?
It means Find My cannot currently display that person's location. On its own, the message does not prove that they have deliberately stopped sharing with you.
Can I choose which iPhone shares my location?
Yes. If you use more than one Apple device, Find My shows which device is currently Sharing From. On the iPhone you want to use, you can choose Use This iPhone as My Location.
Can I use Apple's Find My People feature with an Android phone?
The People location-sharing feature described in this guide is part of Apple's Find My system on Apple devices. If one person uses Android, you would normally need a different cross-platform location-sharing method rather than following this iPhone-to-iPhone guide.
Can I stop sharing my location later?
Yes. In Find My → People, choose the person and use Stop Sharing My Location. You can also turn off Share My Location under the Me tab if you want to hide your location from everyone.
Can Find My tell me when someone gets home?
Yes. Find My supports location-based notifications for events such as somebody arriving at or leaving a chosen place. Recurring notifications about another person's location require that person's approval.
Is Find My an emergency tracking service?
No. Find My can be very useful for everyday location sharing and reassurance, but a person's displayed location should not be treated as guaranteed second-by-second emergency monitoring. If someone may be in immediate danger, seek appropriate help rather than relying on Find My alone.
