Does your Samsung actually need a new battery?
Short battery life, unexpected shutdowns and a phone that needs charging several times a day can all point towards a worn battery. But poor battery life doesn't automatically mean the battery itself is the problem.

Our starting point: establish whether the battery is genuinely worn before replacing it. Apps, software, poor mobile signal and other faults can all contribute to excessive battery drain.

Battery problems tend to develop gradually, but the same complaint — “my battery doesn't last anymore” — can have several different causes. Looking at how the phone behaves is more useful than simply assuming its age means the battery needs replacing.
Symptoms that can point to a worn battery
Particularly when several of these appear together:
- Battery life has gradually become much shorter
- The phone needs charging far more often than it used to
- Battery percentage drops unusually quickly during normal use
- The phone shuts down unexpectedly despite showing charge remaining
- Performance or reliability becomes noticeably worse at a low charge level
Problems that can look like battery failure
A replacement battery won't necessarily solve these:
- An app suddenly using an unusually high amount of power
- Poor mobile signal making the phone work harder to stay connected
- Heavy background activity, syncing or location use
- A software or settings change causing unusually high consumption
- Heavy gaming, navigation, video or other demanding use

One useful question: did the problem appear suddenly?
A battery that has simply worn through normal use will often deteriorate progressively. If a Samsung that was lasting reasonably well suddenly starts losing charge dramatically, it's worth looking for what changed before deciding that the battery itself has failed.
This is why diagnosis matters: fitting a new battery to a phone whose real problem is excessive power consumption may leave the customer with exactly the same complaint afterwards.

Why Samsung batteries don't last forever
The lithium-ion battery inside a Samsung Galaxy is a consumable component. Every time it is charged, discharged and used, a small amount of chemical ageing takes place inside the battery.
Over time it can hold less usable energy than it could when it was new. The phone may still charge to 100%, but that 100% no longer necessarily represents the same amount of usable capacity it had when the battery was new.
Eventually that difference becomes noticeable in everyday use: less time between charges, faster percentage drops and, in more heavily worn batteries, reduced reliability.

There isn't a fixed age when every Samsung battery needs replacing. A heavily used Galaxy may develop noticeable battery problems sooner than a lightly used phone of exactly the same age. How the phone actually performs is more useful than simply looking at the date it was purchased.

The word “aftermarket” covers a very wide range of replacement batteries. Some are produced to a good standard and can provide a sensible alternative to the original part. Others are built primarily to achieve the lowest possible price. That distinction matters when comparing battery repairs.

Don't compare battery-replacement prices without comparing the battery being fitted. A cheaper quote isn't necessarily poor value, and a higher quote isn't automatically better — but you should know whether you're being quoted for a genuine Samsung battery, a quality aftermarket alternative or an unspecified generic part.

A sensible repair for the phone
On some A-series models, a quality aftermarket option can make good economic sense without treating all aftermarket batteries as equal.
Why offer an aftermarket option on the Galaxy A-series? The cost of a genuine part can represent a larger proportion of the value of some A-series phones. Offering a quality alternative gives the customer a genuine choice rather than making an otherwise worthwhile battery repair uneconomical.
A different kind of battery problem
What if your Samsung battery is swollen?
A battery that simply doesn't last as long as it used to is one thing. A battery that has physically swollen is different and should not be treated as normal battery wear.
As a lithium-ion battery swells it can place pressure on other parts of the phone. On some devices the first visible sign is the rear cover beginning to lift; on others the display can start separating from the frame.
Don't press a lifted screen or back cover down in an attempt to close the phone again. The cause needs to be established first.
Possible signs of battery swelling
- The rear cover has started lifting away from the frame
- The screen appears to be separating without an obvious impact
- The phone looks thicker or distorted around the battery area
- A previously flat panel no longer sits correctly in the frame
Don't continue treating a swollen battery like a normal worn battery
If you suspect the battery has swollen, avoid charging or unnecessarily using the phone and have it inspected. Do not puncture, bend, squeeze or attempt to flatten the battery yourself.
Getting more life from your phone
Can a new battery give an older Samsung a new lease of life?
If the phone still does everything you need but you're constantly reaching for the charger, replacing a genuinely worn battery can be one of the most worthwhile repairs you can make. The important part is having realistic expectations about what the repair will — and won't — change.
What a new battery can improve
- More usable time between charges when the old battery has lost capacity

- Reliability when using the phone at lower charge levels
- The practicality of keeping an otherwise perfectly usable Galaxy

Replacement doesn't always mean replacing the phone
If an older Galaxy is still in good condition, still receives the support you need and still does everything you ask of it, a battery replacement can be considerably more sensible than buying another phone simply because the original battery has worn out.
The key is identifying the limiting factor. If the battery is the part holding an otherwise good phone back, replacement can make a noticeable everyday difference. If the battery isn't the problem, fitting one unnecessarily won't transform the device.

A worn battery on its own can be a very sensible repair. The decision changes when the phone has several other expensive problems or no longer meets what you need from it.

A damaged AMOLED display alongside a worn battery can substantially increase the total repair cost.
Several faults at once
Charging, camera, screen or other problems may make the combined repair less economical.
The phone no longer suits you
A new battery won't solve insufficient storage, missing features or a device that no longer meets your needs.
Repair cost vs device value
On an older lower-value Galaxy, the overall condition of the phone should be considered before spending heavily on repairs.
We'd rather tell you when a repair doesn't make financial sense. If a battery replacement is likely to give an otherwise good Samsung useful extra life, it's often worthwhile. If several faults make the repair poor value, that's part of the conversation too.

Samsung Galaxy phones are tightly assembled devices, so replacing the battery involves more than simply removing a cover and dropping another battery in. The exact procedure varies between models, but the basic approach is much the same.

The phone is carefully opened using the appropriate method for the particular Galaxy model.

The old battery is removed and the correct genuine Samsung or selected A-series aftermarket battery is fitted.

Reassemble & test
The phone is reassembled and checked so that charging and normal operation can be confirmed before it is returned.
One important point about water resistance: opening a factory-sealed phone disturbs its original seals. Although the device is carefully reassembled, we don't represent a repaired phone as having the same factory-certified water resistance it had when it left Samsung.
